The Journey of a Mother and Son with Special Needs

The Journey of a Mother and Son with Special Needs

As a disabled person, having the Station Manager help me catch the train is always the best option, especially when the coach positions are set up in a haphazard way and the train lands at a different platform number. Murphy’s Law seems to always be at its best in our case. I have to help myself and my son, who has his own limitations, while trying to keep everyone’s sanity intact and make the most out of each trip. At the same time, I try to make everyone around me aware of our special needs, which are quite random in nature and genuine.

Support from Pantry Car Staff

I also try to get support from the Pantry Car staff, including the Incharge and support staff. Our journey has been a mixed bag of experiences - some rewarding, some bitter and frustrating. But mostly, every experience is a learning opportunity for me and my son. Our recent trip from Pune to Bangalore and back was so rewarding for both of us. We both have our own constraints when it comes to dealing with unpredictable situations. We try our best to cope with each situation as a learning opportunity while making every system aware of our existence as people with special needs.

Dealing with Anxiety

We started this journey out of the need to be on our own and deal with our anxiety, which is an inherent part of our chronic ailment. It may not be apparent at first glance, but those who experience it either empathize with us or threaten us or reward us. This time, serendipitously, it has enlightened us. I am going to discuss this in my brand new group of chosen ones who value such enriching experiences that lead my intellectual urges to flow with creative juices.

Creating Intellectual Assets

This ultimately leads me to create intellectual assets about which I have been vocal and have tried to express my intellectual urges to contribute to the knowledge economy by recommending a win-win situation for every system and community - whether it’s a government entity, co-passengers, public sector entity, healthcare sector, support groups, hypocritical relationships, toxic workplaces or unsupportive habitats in the education system.

Highlighting Real-Life Incidents

I am going to highlight a few real-life incidents that my son and I have experienced on our journey as a mother-son duo of outliers who have been fighting for their existence for more than two decades. We are still high on our ‘josh’. Now, as a mother who needs special care after critical medical treatment that will be life-changing for both of us, I need to create good support for myself first and then for my prodigy son who is now an IITian and quite mature for his age considering the struggles his mother has gone through raising her only child single-handedly with all her dignity while playing dual roles as both parents.

Challenges of Single Parenting

The challenge posed by single parenting was having a gifted child identified by renowned psychologists’ research groups about which I had never heard anything before. On top of that, I was gifted with a chronic, disabling, irreversible, non-curable and dreadful ailment that was self-diagnosed and then easily confirmed by almost ten different medical experts. Since then, my journey of survival has been full of challenges.
